Instagram will not render end-to-end encryption (E2EE) of Direct Messages anymore starting May 8, 2026; that has been confirmed by Meta. Up until this point, the E2EE, which was implemented gradually since 2023, gave assurance to only senders and recipients to read the messages. Meta will have the ability to access all DM content, such as text, photos, videos, voice notes, etc., once more beginning after May 8.

Some of the reasons the company mentioned as motivating its change of mind were increased safety features, increased content moderation speeds, improved spam detection, and better ad targeting. Meta highlighted that the change makes the change consistent with its larger ecosystem (WhatsApp still has E2EE), yet critics say it opens sensitive dialog to be requested by a government, breach of data, or abuse of power by employees.

Until the expiry of the deadline, users can either export chats or switch. The move has since been criticized by privacy advocates and other groups that relate to digital rights as a retrogressive measure towards building the trust of the user. Meta is adamant that strong protection should still exist; still, the policy has already provoked the trend of deleting Instagram and demands even more pronounced rules in the EU and India. The current encrypted chat sessions will be decrypted on the server side after the cutoff.
