Iran has officially invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the state funeral and burial ceremonies of its late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sent the invitation to the Ministry of External Affairs of India.

Khamenei died on February 28, 2026, in a joint strike by the U.S. and Israel, and his funeral processions will start July 4 in Tehran, continue July 5 in Qom and culminate July 9 in Mashhad. The elaborate ceremonies will be attended by world leaders and millions of grieving people.

The MEA has issued the invitation and is yet to confirm India's representation level. This is in the background of continuing India-Iran dialogue on energy and connectivity projects. The invitation echoes the bilateral partnership's strategic significance in spite of the volatility in the region. There is close watch on whether PM Modi or any high-level delegation will attend the high-profile event.
