What appears to be the most dramatic political event in the Middle East to date is the assassination of the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an airstrike targeting his official residence in the city of Tehran, the capital of Iran, on March 2, 2026, at the same time simultaneous reports were issued by Iranian state television (IRIB) and the official news agency Iranian Radio and Television News (IRNA).

The raid, termed by the Iranian government as a cowardly joint US-Zionist operation, took place at 3:45 AM local time. IRIB interfered with normal programming to air the confirmation of the fact that the Supreme Leader was killed, alongside some of the main Revolutionary Guard commanders and members of his close security detail. None of the targeted buildings were rescued.

The attack has been alleged by Iranian officials to have been conducted by using sophisticated stealth missiles and guided body ammunition discharged by the US and Israel, launched from within Israeli territory, and with the help of US satellites and refueling. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a threat of harsh and ruthless vengeance and put the nation on the highest alert in the opinion of military forces.

US and Israeli officials are yet to come out officially to either confirm or deny attendance as of 09:13 AM IST. Anonymous sources in Washington and Tel Aviv, however, informed the international media that the strike was a decisive move against the nuclear and missile programs in Iran after the assessment of threats was obvious over time.

This news has caused mayhem in Tehran: masses of people have assembled in disbelief and mourning in an outpouring before Jamkaran Mosque and other places of worship, and hardline elements are demanding retaliation as quickly as possible. Repeated succession procedures are said to have come into effect, and the Assembly of Experts is set to meet in an urgent session in order to choose an interim leader. There is talk of Mojtaba Khamenei (son of the Supreme Leader) and senior clerics such as President Ebrahim Raisi or IRGC commanders.

World markets responded violently: oil prices shot up more than 12% in early trading, gold soared to all-time highs, and Asian and European stock markets tumbled on accompanying war fears across the region.

This evolution spells the gravest setback to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 Revolution, and it may lead to uncontrollable revenge attacks by the proxy network of Iran in the region. The world awaits Washington, Tel Aviv, and other Iranian leadership to acknowledge said statements and confirm them as official.
