The Income Tax Return filing deadline for Assessment Year 2026-27 (FY 2025-26) is July 31, 2026 for most individuals filing ITR-1 and ITR-2. Over 4 crore returns have already been filed, and the e-filing portal is running smoothly this year.
Tax experts including ClearTax founder Archit Gupta and Tax2win’s Abhishek Soni say an extension looks unlikely. Forms were released early, deadlines are staggered (August 31 for non-audit ITR-3/4), and technical issues remain minor. Last year’s double extension was driven by major glitches and delayed forms — conditions not present now.
While a short extension cannot be completely ruled out if severe problems arise in the final days, taxpayers are strongly advised not to wait. Missing the deadline attracts late fees up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F, interest on unpaid tax, and possible loss of loss carry-forward benefits.
File your ITR early on the official portal to stay stress-free and compliant.
