Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut has reacted sharply to veteran actress Sharmila Tagore’s comments on Vande Mataram. Tagore had suggested that only the first two stanzas of the national song should be sung, arguing that later verses mentioning Hindu deities like Durga and Kali could be difficult for those who believe in one God.

Responding on Instagram Stories, Kangana said she appreciated Tagore’s openness but was “shocked as an artist” at her “limiting and contrived” interpretation. She emphasised that poetry uses metaphors, and Vande Mataram represents the spirit of India’s freedom struggle, urging the nation to awaken its inner Shakti.

“Please come out of Hindu-Muslim mindset,” Kangana wrote, adding that even doctors refer to power as Shakti. She invoked Swami Vivekananda’s call for strength and ended on a personal note, saying she still loves Tagore and would welcome a “crushing hug.” The exchange has reignited debate over the national song’s artistic versus religious interpretations.
