The Karnataka government approved a sizeable hike of 60 percent in the minimum wage for laborers to give some respite to millions of employees in the state. The new wage revision will benefit unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled workers in such areas as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and hospitality—it will take effect immediately.

The labor department notification has raised the minimum wages substantially on a daily basis. This is in line with robust pressure from trade unions and workers'' associations over rising inflation and living expenses.
