Approximately 8,000 employees across North America, about 10% of the company's total, have been informed that they will be required to work remotely on May 20, 2026, as part of a significant personnel reduction initiative by Meta Platforms. The decision is aimed at ensuring that the restructuring process will be carried out smoothly and that the offices will not be unnecessarily disrupted during the notification process.

The cuts, which were first announced in April, come as part of a bid by Meta for efficiency in its efforts to recoup extremely significant investments in AI, which it anticipates totaling $125-145 billion this year. The company also has roughly 6,000 unfilled jobs that will be put on a “freeze list.” Up to 20% of staff members might be affected by other organizational redos, such as staff transfers to AI projects and elimination of managers.

A notification should be sent by email (working and personal) by May 20. Severance payments will be offered to impacted workers. The move is the latest in a series of moves intended to make the company run more efficiently under Zuckerberg, whose overarching goal is to use artificial intelligence to help smaller teams achieve the desired effect. Staff morale is still low, and there's likely to be more cuts in 2026.
