New Delhi: Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, has issued a decisive statement saying that petrol and diesel cars do not have any future in India.
Addressing the Busworld India Conclave 2026, Gadkari cautioned the automakers that relying solely on fossil fuel vehicles is not riskless. Provided you (OEMs) are not going to change, be cautious; there is no good future for petrol and diesel, he said.
The minister stated that we should become less reliant on imported crude oil and fight against increasing air pollution. He encouraged the industry to speed up the transition to cleaner options such as biofuels, ethanol blending (E85), CNG, LNG, hydrogen, and electric vehicles.
Gadkari especially pointed at the importance of green fuels in the transportation system and urged people to take quality first and cost-cutting second. He said that petrol and diesel engines will no longer be pure, as they will slowly become familiar with blends and alternative fuels as the new norm.
The comments have brought back the debate on the green mobility ambitions of the Indian people. Although it has environmental and energy security advantages in terms of the transition, there are still issues of infrastructure, costs, and consumer adoption. The government is still driving policies to promote electric and alternate fuel vehicles in order to achieve long-term sustainability goals.
