New Delhi: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, on March 24, 2026, in one of its significant policy sacrifices, gave an order that was compulsory for households to switch over to piped natural gas (PNG) where the service is accessible.
Under the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, the authorized entities will notify households through registered mail or speed post. PNG connection will be available to consumers over a period of three months. Otherwise, the LPG being supplied to that address will simply be cut off past the deadline.
The government seeks to increase the pace of gas network growth and encourage cleaner fuel, as well as decrease reliance on imported LPG, particularly at a time when disruptions to the supply chain by the current West Asia crisis still persist.
The supply of LPG will not, however, be reduced when the authorized entity issues a No Objection Certificate that states providing a PNG connection is technically impossible. The order applies, also, to situations in which housing societies prevent access to pipelines.
Authority has called on all qualified households to consider using PNG to prevent inconvenience.
