The Delhi government has also published the draft Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026-2030, which suggests that two-wheelers powered by petrol, diesel, or CNG will not be allowed to be registered after April 1, 2028. This bold step comes after a prior phase-out of three-wheelers, and new three-wheelers can be registered only as electric autos, beginning January 1, 2027.
Given that two-wheelers already constitute almost 67% of the vehicle fleet in Delhi, this change is essential in curbing air pollution in the city. The policy also has attractive incentives in the form of purchase subsidies on electric two-wheelers (up to 30,000 or higher in initial years) and tax freebies as well as strategies of creating massive charging networks.
It also focuses on commercial fleets and has scrappage benefits to old petrol vehicles. Public suggestions are open to the draft before it can get acceptance by the Delhi Cabinet. Although environmentalists have acclaimed the move, bike fans and dealers have also raised concerns on infrastructure preparedness and increased initial prices of bikes. Delhi will be one of the first large cities in India to introduce such a strong timeline of electrifying two-wheelers when it is enforced.
