On April 29, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 594km-long Ganga Expressway in Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh. The greenfield, access-controlled, six-lane expressway is 36 km longer than the National Highway-56 (NH-56) connecting Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in eastern UP.

The expressway, which will facilitate travel at speeds of up to 120 kmph, will cut the distance between Meerut and Prayagraj from 10-12 hours to 6-8 hours. It has been created to be driven up to 120 kmph and can be upgraded to eight lanes. One unique aspect is a 3.2 km long "airstrip" in Shahjahanpur for emergency use by the Indian Air Force.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the expressway. This expressway is going to revolutionize the state's transport, draw industrial investment, and generate new economic ventures along the way, bringing much-needed infrastructure to Uttar Pradesh.
