The Food Safety and Drug Authority (FSDA) in the state of Uttar Pradesh has suspended the license of 110 packaged drinking water brands in the state in a large-scale crackdown on this area of health concern. This was announced in mid-February 2026 following laboratory results of samples where contamination of bacteria and yeast was found, and therefore the water was not suitable to be consumed by the human beings.

A statewide drive was ordered by FSDA Commissioner Roshan Jacob as a result of sporadic complaints about polluted and poor-quality bottled water distributed by local manufacturers. The assignments to the enforcement teams held spontaneous checks and samples in different districts, and the results revealed serious violations of food safety standards.

Some of the samples were reported to have been contaminated with bacteria and yeast by laboratory tests, and the water was thus not safe to drink. Suspension of licenses has been suspended immediately on the ground of the necessity to protect public health, and the authorities note the possibility of deadly diseases in case of using impure water.

This move is based on previous measures, such as the suspension of licenses of 159 drinking water units in January 2026 and the prohibition of 39 mineral water brands due to the same reasons. The most recent shift is aimed at the local and regional brands, but shoppers are recommended to read labels and use those that are trusted and certified.

The authorities have threatened manufacturers to follow FSSAI standards strictly, such as proper processing, hygiene, and quality tests. Those units that do not comply will also be subject to additional punishment, as they can be closed down permanently and taken to court. The FSDA has encouraged the people to be suspicious about the products and not eat the product without verification.

This raid underlines the persistence of problems regarding safe packaged drinking water in Uttar Pradesh, which is saddled with the increasing demand. Health specialists advise that water should be boiled or brands that are certifiable should be used to avoid waterborne diseases. Be right-streeted—it is good cases you live! Keep informed since research is going on and new information is being revealed.
