In a horrifying incident, two Indian men were shot dead late on Friday night in the outer periphery of the Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, Covo, Bergamo Province, in northern Italy.
The two victims, 48-year-old Raginder Singh of Covo and 48-year-old Gurmit Singh of the neighboring Agnadello, were on their way out of a Vaisakhi festival party that was being held in a warehouse that had been used as a place of worship when the attack happened around minutes before midnight.
Witnesses said that they were approached by one assailant who opened fire and fired several times (some 10 shell casings found) in their direction and got away in a car. Italian police are investigating that it was a cold-blooded killing and have gone on a manhunt. The cause is still to be determined.
The Indian and Sikh community in Italy has been thrown into shock by the incident. The Indian Embassy is communicating with the local authorities and keeping them informed on the process and providing assistance to the families of the deceased.
