On May 9, a man suddenly jumped into the revered ‘Badi Deg,' a large ceremonial cauldron, at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah of the central town of Rajasthan, causing a shocking incident.
Though it went viral on social media, a CCTV image of the moment was recorded. The man allegedly attempted to put cash and offerings into one of his pockets inside the deg. The staff and members of the temple rushed in: one of the temple guards leaped for him. The intruder got pulled out and was beaten prior to handing him over to the police.
That the Badi Deg is used for cooking at a large scale (langar) for the devotees makes for a large donation. Police are investigating the case, and one report indicates the man might be mentally deranged.
The incident has left many wondering about the security of one of the holiest of Sufi shrines in India. The people of God were outraged with the compromise of the safety and the desecration of the holy place.
The administration of Ajmer has assured strict action and enhanced measures to come to an end to such instances. The video is going around much on social media, leading to interest and discussion.
