Suddenly, 58 engineering colleges have been closed in India—a jolt to the education industry. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the state government had called for the shutdowns as massively serious violations had occurred, according to official sources.

In fact, many institutions were discovered for years to be non-functional due to false approvals, poor facilities, unemployed teachers, and no students enrolled. A few colleges were reported as misusing government schemes and also not furnishing the fundamental facilities such as laboratories, libraries, etc. to the students.

Such a clear-cut step hopes to enhance the quality of TE and keep the pupils away from shoddy institutes. The closures are part of a broader push to "streamline the engineering education system that creates job-ready students."

Those affected are being hosted in suitable colleges in the vicinity. Education experts are happy about the development: they are hoping that it will improve the standards and will bring 'confidence' to the engineering programs of India. More such actions could come if colleges do not meet mandates on norms, authorities say.
