On May 12, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. does not require Chinese President Xi Jinping's assistance in bringing the prolonged Iran conflict to its conclusion.

Trump told reporters as he left the White House for Beijing, where he would meet with Xi, that they would solve their differences either peaceably or by other means.

As the war has been wreaking havoc in the Strait of Hormuz and world oil flows, Trump said that he would have a “long talk” with Xi regarding Iran but dwelled on the lack of Chinese involvement rather than emphasizing it. He stressed that the US has done a huge amount of damage to Iran's military force.

The statement precedes a trade-off tariff agreement summit between Trump and Xi that will focus on Iran, trade, and tariffs. Analysts point out that China's robust economic relations with Iran might have a role in a long-term solution should Trump become certain of success.
