On April 8, 2026, President Donald Trump announced that the United States will place heavy tariffs of 50 percent on all and any goods imported by any country that is found to be providing military weapons to Iran. The sweeping action, published in Truth Social, will be effective as of now, and there will be no exceptions or exemptions.

The announcement was only hours after the US and Iran reached the consensus of a two-week ceasefire, which comes with safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Several countries, notably China and Russia, regarded as victims of the warning, were warned by Trump not to re-arm Tehran with missiles, air-defense technology, or any type of dual-use technology.

Although Trump did not indicate any specific countries, media reports claim that Iran had recently requested advanced weaponry and components. Another indicator of a pending phase in the relations between the president and Iran was the fact that despite the ceasefire he said between them, discussions were going on regarding tariff and sanction relief, which allowed a possible regime change and a stable region.

According to legal experts, it is unclear who has the power to issue such sweeping tariffs as a result of recent Supreme Court decisions, and at least the action indicates how Trump employs economic coercion in foreign policy. The reaction of global markets during the shaky truce was muted. Additional information about implementation awaits.
