A major move in this order was taken after some factory workers had faced violent protests against the agitation of long-pending grievances. The agitators announced various important welfare policies, which were to be enacted by the district administration on Sunday. District Magistrate Medha Roopam declared that all the factories were obliged to give mandatory weekly leave to all the workforce and doubled their remunerations in scenarios where any of the workers were needed to work.
Working overtime will also be paid at double the usual rate. Other announcements are that the salaries will be paid by the 10th of every month, the annual bonus will be credited in the bank accounts prior to November 30, medical coverage will be provided, and the workplace safety norms will be strictly followed. An official complaints cell and a committee headed by women to deal with sexual harassment have also been stipulated.
These were decided upon following consultations with top leadership on labor and industry. This announcement was only a day ahead of the protests in Phase 2, Sector 60, and Hosiery Complex, which soon went violent with stone pelting and vehicles being burned. Officials called on factories to enforce the directives to enable factory peace in the region once again.
