Vijay Issues Closure of 717 Liquor Shops in First Major Order as TN CM. As the chief minister of TN, Vijay, this is the first time that he has passed a decision of closure of 717 liquor outlets.
Tamil Nadu Governor M. K. Ramanarayana Reddy has taken a decisive action to shut down 717 state-run liquor outlets, TASMAC, in a bold and opportune measure, just days after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay took the oath.
Vulnerable shops within 500 meters of educational institutions (186), places of worship (276), and bus stands (255) are to close over the next fortnight. Adopted following a statewide survey and designed to safeguard public health, particularly youth and families.
There are currently 4,765 liquor shops in operation in the state, with TASMAC operating a large revenue source. The step has been applauded by others such as Kamal Haasan, who described it as a welcome step to make alcohol less easily available in sensitive areas.
The government noted the order is in line with its dedication to "people's welfare." Driven by Vijay's party TVK, which kept its pre-poll promises, this is being seen as fulfillment.
