Kolkata: In a theatrical twist to the outcome of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday categorically denied any intention to give up her post despite the enthusiastic Trinamool Congress procession erupting in victory amid its preliminary estimate of 2.5 million seats in the state.
In a press conference, Banerjee stated, “We have not lost the election; we have morally won. I will not resign; I have not lost. We did not lose the election; morally, we have won. She claimed that some 100 seats had been looted forcibly, and she alleged that the Election Commission was biased and had been rigorously looting offices.
The majority of seats were much higher, with the BJP winning more than 200 seats and the TMC less than 80. Banerjee, though, said that there is no doubt that she would go to Raj Bhavan and resign.
The declaration has caused a tremendous political outburst, with the opposition party leaders insisting on her instant resignation. Law thinkers are arguing over the constitutional alternatives and what the governor can possibly do.
This unprecedented position has further aggravated the political crisis in the state after the historic power change.
