On April 2, 2026, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) unexpectedly displaced Raghav Chadha as its deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, and his seat was taken over by Punjab MP Ashok Mittal. The party officially informed the Rajya Sabha Secretariat and asked that no longer should the allotment of the speaking time of the AAP quota be given to Chadha.

Although AAP leaders, such as Mittal, termed the change a normal organizational move to ensure that more leaders are charged with responsibility, several reports indicate otherwise. The long silence by Chadha on critical party matters such as the excise policy case of Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia and his non-attendance at some of the high-profile events led by Kejriwal were reportedly what created tension between the two.

After being perceived as a close associate of Kejriwal, Chadha has been paying substantial attention to more general citizen-concentrated matters in Parliament, including paternity leave, the rights of gig workers, and food prices, and not fundamental AAP campaigns. That sense of distraction and doubt of discipline and adherence is thought to have led to the leadership change and caused a lot of speculation of internal division in the party. Chadha is yet to comment officially on the development.
