President Donald Trump took a confrontational and unrepentant approach to gasoline prices on March 4, 2026, after the confrontation in the Middle East intensified to severely drag crude oil prices around the world well above $105 per barrel.

Interviewing journalists outside the White House, Trump answered the questions concerning the influence of US naval attacks on Iranian ships and the concerns about the interruption of the supply in the Strait of Hormuz: I am not concerned. In the event of increasing gasoline prices, they increase. We are now independent of energy. And that we possess more oil and gas than anybody. The American people are aware of the fact that certain times you need to pay a little more in order to hold America strong and safe.

The comment was made at average US gasoline prices that had soared to a record high of $4.12 a gallon (national average), and some states (California, Hawaii, and New York) had already marginally exceeded $5. The analysts caution that with long-lasting oil prices above 100, the pump prices may escalate to 5-6 around the country in several weeks should the war intensify.

The statements resemble the long-standing energy dominance agenda of Trump, which states that, to counteract international shocks, the country needs to produce more domestically (even in Alaska and offshore). He repeated that the US is currently an energy exporter and it is no longer reliant on Middle Eastern oil as was the case with earlier administrations.

The announcement was attacked by critics, such as Democratic members of Parliament and consumer organizations, who labeled the announcement out of touch since working-class families are already experiencing the squeeze at the pump. In response, Senator Elizabeth Warren mentioned that Trump is so cavalier in his views, he is disregarding the fact that millions of Americans are dealing with actual pain each time they fill up.

The reaction to this was hailed as tough leadership by the proponents of the reaction, as Trump enjoyed low gas prices during his first term in office courtesy of deregulation and production booms. The government officials later explained that the White House is keeping an eye on the situation, and it does have instruments (Strategic Petroleum Reserve releases, domestically produced volumes) to contain extreme spikes.

With the Middle East crisis ongoing, where Iran is threatening to strike back and US forces are being on the alert, the unconcerned response by Trump has become a central point in the national argument on energy security, inflation, and foreign policy costs. The price of the pump will continue to be volatile in the next several weeks, and any further rise in the price will probably push society to its limits regarding increased prices.
