Violence flared during the occasion of Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee's arrival from Delhi at the airport in Kolkata on Friday night, as the supporters of the two parties clashed near the arrival terminal. Banerjee had met Om Birla, Speaker of Lok Sabha, in the national capital.
As per the claims of TMC, BJP workers had gathered to take out Banerjee carrying rotten eggs and, allegedly, weapons. There was a violent physical confrontation, with chaos and traffic jams. However, police acted swiftly, and Banerjee was escorted out by big security by 10:15 PM without addressing the media or supporters.
There were no serious injuries reported. The incident highlights the volatile political tensions in West Bengal in the wake of recent changes. A video of the skirmish has been uploaded to social media widely. Authorities kept a tight watch to ensure that the situation did not get out of hand. The conflict is the latest in the bitter feud between the two groups in the state. More information is expected with ongoing investigations.
