At around noon on April 16, 2026, a catastrophic fire erupted in the crowded Kanawani slum village in the Ghaziabad police station of Indirapuram in Uttar Pradesh. The fire quickly expanded to about 150-200 huts, burning down a whole household and impacting some 200-250 individuals who lost their assets.

The incident also led to the explosion of several LPG gas cylinders, exacerbating the situation and releasing thick smoke and flames viewable at a distance of almost 10 km. People started to panic after the fire went through extremely flammable material in the group of slums.

The Ghaziabad Fire Department had approximately 22 fire tenders and was able to contain 90 percent of the fire by evening. Fortunately, no victims have been reported yet. Rescue and relief efforts are in progress, and the authorities are taking an assessment of the damages. The fire is still under investigation for the cause.
