Tehran/New Delhi: In an important Indian energy security breakthrough, Iran has declared that vessels of friendly nations such as India will be allowed safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz in the midst of the West Asia war.
In an interview, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that Iran has permitted passage to ships belonging to countries like India, China, Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan. He pointed out that if there is coordination with Iranian authorities, the non-hostile ships move safely.
The news follows the passing of several Indian-flagged LPG tankers through the strait over the last few days, giving much-needed relief to Indian cooking gas reserves. And around four Indian ships have passed already; more to come.
India has retained its independent foreign policy and kept up diplomatic relations with Tehran. Although the government has intensified that ingenuous passage may occur without a formal grant under the worldwide legislation, the cognitive cooperation has sufficiently aided in the disruption of the turmoil produced by the conflict.
India, a major importer of crude oil and LNG, depends on the Strait of Hormuz to bring large volumes of these materials into the country, which would drastically impact domestic gas and oil prices and supply.
